Tiger Woods, winner of 71 PGA Tour events but none since 2009, 11-under with his 67 at Pebble Beach and was third, four shots behind Charlie Wi shot three-under-par 69, who has never won a tournament and isn’t sure exactly how difficult protecting a Sunday lead will be.
Woods will be the center of attention on Sunday, playing with Mickelson. Woods’ round of 67 on Saturday at Pebble Beach meant that for the first time in three years he has shot three rounds in the 60s in the similar week.
Tiger and Phil Mickelson, together again, Today’s round will be their 30th collectively in a PGA Tour event. They are among those within striking distance going into the final round.
Woods now must pass only two players to earn his first PGA Tour victory since the BMW Championship outside Chicago in September 2009.
It will not be simple, given Wi firm play and the four shots Woods must make up. Woods owns four wins in which he came back from a shortage of four-plus shots in the final round, together with the AT&T in 2000 and, most freshly, the Memorial Tournament in June 2009.
Saturday’s Woods, who started his round on No. 10, made five birdies. He added one more birdie at No. 2 before concluding with seven straight pars.
